French Prison Made Cupboard 1920
£450.00
An unusual and incredibly attractive French Prison made Cupboard, crafted by inmate Jacob Mayers August 1923. Signed and dated by the maker.
Lovingly scratch built to pass the time using what materials were available, including old wine crates, some still bearing the original labels. The facade is attempting to be grand with a pair of scrolled supports either side of an arched pediment painted in dark blue, the pine doors are a lovely dusky pink colour with claret coloured uprights either side and cross section finished with a textured detail to resemble faux wood or stone. The sides are also painted and finished with the same detail as the front. It features a locking latch and 4 interior shelves. Perfectly timeworn and functional both free standing or wall mounted. A unique piece of vernacular furniture signed and dated by the maker in pencil to the inside of the door.
