Carved Wood Momento Mori Statue
A wonderful carved wood statue of a women laying in state on a Regency chaise, dating from the mid 19th century.
Most likely a momento mori commissioned for a church or private mausoleum and very much in the style of Ophelia from Hamlet, which was incredibly popular at the time and possibly an artist’s interpretation. It is well carved with magnificent detail to the sitter & chaise, decorative brass embellishments at each and beautiful original polychrome paint & gilding. A unique and highly decorative piece.
