An impressive ‘Grand Tour’ period alabaster lion dating from the mid 19th century. Well executed, carved from a colourful piece of alabaster with rich yellow tones and striking black veining throughout the stone, particularly to the head & mane.
The lion is depicted laying with outstretched paws, the tail is wrapped around its hind quarters. The mouth of the beast is portrayed as half open displaying the teeth , alluding to its ferocity . Excellent attention to detail with well carved mane & coat, rib cage definition and defined musculature expressing the power and majesty of the subject. Presented in timeworn yet solid & complete condition, it has one old repair to the front left hand leg and a hairline crack to the tail. A rare souvenir piece brought back by wealthy travellers during the 19th century.
